Honoring God In Trials

I was leafing through my journal tonight and found the following quote copied from Trusting God, Even When Life Hurts, by Jerry Bridges. I went through this book last summer but re-reading it is on my list of things to do!

"Our first priority in times of adversity is to honor and glorify God by trusting Him. We tend to make our first priority the gaining of relief from our feelings of heartache or disappointment or frustration. This is a natural desire, and God has promised to give us grace sufficient for our trials and peace for our anxieties. (see 2 Cor 12:9; Phil 4:6,7)

But just as God's will is to take precedence over our will (in Matt 26:39 Jesus Himself said, "Yet not as I will, but as You will"), so God's honor is to take precedence over our feelings.

We honor God by choosing to trust Him when we don't understand what He is doing or why He has allowed some adverse circumstance to occur. As we seek God's glory, we may be sure that He has purposed our good and that He will not be frustrated in fulfilling that purpose."

Such good, solid, no-nonsense wisdom, yes? Just the type this prone-to-think-with-the-emotions girl needs. So the question is, how can I best glorify God in the circumstances I'm in today? This includes not only right actions, but right thinking and feeling. Of course, aligning these things with God's word isn't always as easily done as flipping a switch, but God will meet us and help us along when we give the effort.

Wow -- I needed to hear this today. Trusting God has been a repeated instruction in my devotions lately. I realize that I don't trust Him enough, but I pray that with each day I learn to trust Him more.

Thank you for sharing!

What a powerful post! I so often need to be reminded to lay my "emotions" at the foot of the cross!
Thank you!
