The Deceitfulness of Sin

From Grace Gems:

Sin is of a penetrating nature. It pierces and winds itself into every corner and chink--into our thoughts, our words, and our works.

Sin will wind itself . . .
into our understandings to darken them,
into our judgments to pervert them,
into our wills to poison them,
into our affections to disorder them,
into our consciences to corrupt them,
and into our lives to debase them.

Sin will wind itself into every duty--and every mercy; it will wind itself into every one of our enjoyments--and concernments.

(Thomas Brooks, "Apples of Gold" 1660)

Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12

But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called "Today," so that none of you will be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. Hebrews 3:13

That Hebrews verse has really been standing out to me lately. Sin really does destroy us..and it starts sometimes so subtly. That's why it is so important to me to be in community where we are not afraid and do not delay to speak truth to each other..even at the risk of ruffling feathers. Hope you are doing well!

You're so right, Angela - being in a community of believers who can be honest with us and who we can be accountable to is key to defeating sin. Thanks for the comment!
